Update finishing mills, expand product outline, improve product quality, reduce operation and maintenance costs MMK and SMS group complete 2500 hot rolling line comprehensive transformation project

The Magnitogorsk Steel Plant (MMK) in Russia has commissioned a 2,500 hot strip production line transformed by the SMS group at its Magnitogorsk plant. The contract includes a complete renovation of the finishing train equipment and the installation of a new automation system.

MMK CEO Pavel Shilyaev summed up the goal of the project: “The transformation of the 2500 hot rolling line is part of our 2025 strategic project. This transformation will bring us a series of advantages: we will expand the product range and reduce Production costs and increase the annual output of hot rolling lines by 500,000 tons."

The close cooperation between MMK and SMS group has made a tailor-made transformation plan for MMK to lay a solid foundation for the future cooperation between the two parties. The retrofit will take four downtimes and be completed by mid-2020.

The 2500 hot rolling line was built in the 1960s and was supplied by a former Soviet manufacturer. As part of the retrofit, the finishing will be equipped with a new hydraulic adjustment system and a work roll bending system. These powerful actuators will enable MMK to produce strip products with minimal geometric tolerances. In addition, SMS group upgraded the drive technology of the finishing train and provided six main drives, including transformers, two new reducers, six gear seats, and a new drive shaft. The SMS group will also install new work rolls and backup roll changers for the finishing train and a new high pressure hydraulic system.

The SMS group has also completely upgraded the automation system of the equipment, including the primary system, process models such as the pass calculation table (PSC) for roughing and finishing units, plate shape, crown and flatness control system (PCFC®). ), Cooling Section Control Model (CSC), hot rolling line full line positioning system, X-Pact® image manipulation and visualization system, and a large number of measuring devices. Before the retrofit, SMS group will perform plug-and-play testing of the automation system. To this end, the automation system is installed in the test center and tested and pre-optimized under near-real field conditions.

As part of the retrofit, the 2500 hot rolling line is equipped with the SMS group's high-performance X-Pact® electrical automation system.
